How to Remove a Feature

As you are editing, you will come across points for structures that may no longer exist and should be deleted.  Before deleting any point be sure you’ve done sufficient research using authoritative sources to confirm that the structure no longer exists. To delete a structure, select the point and click the “Delete” button in the editing window, then confirm the deletion by clicking “OK.”

Although not required, it is helpful to the USGS structures unit to know why you have deleted a point.  You can speed the review process of deleted points by leaving notes in the comment field in the editing window with details including the name and address of the structure, and links to any supporting information justifying the reason for the deletion (such as an article relating to the closing of a school).

QUICK TIP:

If a structure feature has a different name but still serves the same function (such as a school), please update the existing structure point with the new information. Do not delete the old point and add a new point for the new feature.

Please do NOT delete existing points that need to be updated (i.e. need to be moved or have name/address fixed)! Update the existing point and save it.
