How authoritative can www.findagrave.com be when one often runs into poor feature naming like Oak Grove Cemetery in Escambia Co., FL (note the photo in findagrave)? I used the shorter findagrave name instead of the name on the photo. Was this the correct approach? |
The shortened version of this cemetery's name isn't technically incorrect (this is also the version marked in the Historical Topo layer), but in such cases we advise volunteers to enter the name as displayed on any visible signage. We've detailed this guidance in this newsletter article: "Cemeteries with Multiple Names: Which One to Use?" However, even sources we deem authoritative are subject to fallibility, so if you encounter contradicting information you'll have to do some additional sleuthing to verify an official name or address. If you're able to track down a recent image of a sign, then you can't go wrong entering the information listed on that sign. |
