Should we list Youth Development Centers, and if so, should we list them as schools, detention centers, or something else? Per NCDPS "Youths who are adjudicated for offenses that occurred prior to their 18th birthday may be committed to the Juvenile Justice section and assigned to a youth development center, which is the most restrictive, intensive dispositional option available to North Carolina's juvenile courts. A commitment is typically for an indefinite period of at least six months and may continue until the youth's 18th birthday. The commitment period may be extended until the youth's 19th or 21st birthday if the youth was committed for a particular violent offense. A youth must be at least 10 years old to be committed." Does this constitute a long-term facility. I see that short-term facilities are not to be listed. Thank you for your assistance. |

North Carolina Youth Development Centers can be collected as long term prison/correctional features since they may have kids in their custody from the age of 10 possibly up to the age of 18 or longer. It sounds like six months is just the minimum length of commitment in a development center. The NC Youth Detention Centers should not be collected, as they only house youth awaiting a court hearing or other longer term placement.
