I found a school that needs to be updated, but I'm not sure what would be the best type of school. The school is in the database as an elementary school, which it was until recently. Now it is an Adult School- it's run by the local public school district and it's primary purpose is to help individuals over 18 go back to earn their high school diploma or GED (both are offered). They also offer classes towards obtaining a CNA certification and English learner classes. General school and high school seem to be geared towards under-18yo, but I'm not sure this really fits the trade school definition, either. Thoughts? |

We addresses a similar situation in a previous Q&A post, but I'll rehash here: While we don't have any hard and fast rules regarding adult schools (because they all tend to offer differing curriculums) if the school in question meets the following criteria, it can be collected as a General School. Does this school have its own distinct physical address (apart from other school buildings)? Does the district list this school separately from other schools, or is it a program run out of an existing elementary/middle/high school building? Are there organized classes taught at the physical location? If it also offers vocational programs, then it can be labeled as a Technical/Trade School. Since you mentioned a CNA program, I would probably lean towards labeling this as a trade school. Since we've taken the stance of examining these types of schools on a case-by-case basis, it would be helpful if we had the name of this school so we could dig a little deeper. Thanks for the response. I dug a little deeper into their curriculum and while they do focus on high school diplomas and GEDs, it looks like students will earn those degrees with a focus on a career path, such as welding, a forklift operator certificate, etc. So I agree that this would probably lean towards a trade school. Does this school have its own distinct physical address (apart from other school buildings)? Yes, the school is it's own campus and does not have any other type of school at the same address. Does the district list this school separately from other schools, or is it a program run out of an existing elementary/middle/high school building? It is listed as it's own school on the district website. Are there organized classes taught at the physical location? COVID-19 cancellations notwithstanding, yes, classes are normally taught onsite.
