While updating church cemeteries, I have noticed that the unedited names are often shorter than the names on Find A Grave. For example, Old = Potomac Cemetery, New (Find A Grave) = Potomac Baptist Church Cemetery. Old = Carmel Cemetery, New = Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Is there a preferred format? |
The preferred format is the one that is recorded by an authoritative source, and we generally accept the names listed in Find-A-Grave. We don't have any hard and fast rules for naming church cemeteries, since there seems to be quite a bit of variation in church cemetery naming conventions. Some churches may officially refer to their cemeteries using the church name, and others may use a more abbreviated version. If you can locate an image of a cemetery sign displaying the name, then that is the name that should be entered. Find-A-Grave listings are also acceptable, as are alternate names recorded by other authoritative sources (historical records, cemetery or community websites, etc.). As long as the name you've entered can be verified with a bona fide resource, then we will accept the name. |
