What is the proper way to format names with special characters in them? |
Our Name and Address Formatting Guide can be found here: https://navigator.er.usgs.gov/help/WebHelp/tnmcorps_attribute_formatting.pdf |
The database has trouble processing names with special characters in them. Hyphens (-) and slashes (/) are allowed in limited quantities if the authoritative name includes them. For example, West Junior/Senior High School is acceptable formatting, whereas West Junior & Senior High School would need to be changed. "&" should be replaced with "and" "@" should be replaced with "at" "#" needs to be removed and does not need to be replaced, for example "Cemetery #4 can be changed to Cemetery 4" "*" need to be removed and does not need to be replaced "." abbreviations should be spelled out and periods removed https://navigator.er.usgs.gov/help/WebHelp/TNMCorps_Attribute%20Formatting.pdf |
