How do we determine the best authoritative source? For example in some counties in Virginia I am finding there could be three authoritative sources for fire departments. The State of Virginia maintains a database of all fire departments in the state with name and address, the local jurisdictions also have a website containing the names/locations of all their fire departments, and finally, many but not all local volunteer fire departments maintain their own website. Each of these authoritative website may have a different name for the same structure. I've been defaulting to the name used by the local jurisdiction. Any thoughts out there regarding this issue? Thanks. |
Names used by local jurisdictions are likely to be the most accurate, however as long as a name (or address) comes from an authoritative source, it is acceptable. Our new and improved Authoritative Sources List (https://navigator.er.usgs.gov/help/WebHelp/authoritative_sources_courthouses.pdf) is a great guide for deciding which resources are best to use. |
